a Study in Spectrum

A Study in Spectrum, an Introduction

(originally posted to Cohost on June 29, 2022)

hi if you don't know who i am, i'm remy, the internet's worst clown and sherlock holmes enthusiast. i take these titles as seriously as you think i do.

since i've been young, sherlock holmes has been a hyperfixation/special interest for me, so the title of this project "A Study In Spectrum" has a double meaning of wanting to explore the wide swaths of detective and mystery media out there, and also i'm autistic. (It was probably never ACD's explicit intent, but sherlock holmes viewed in a modern lens is easily seen as probably autistic and probably gay or asexual.)

at the time of writing, sherlock holmes as a character has existed for 135 years. there are 4 novels and 56 short stories written by ACD, as well as a seemingly limitless amount of pastiches, adaptations, and references throughout media in that entire time. i've consumed a lot of this media already, but i can always consume more! the mission statement of A Study in Spectrum is such that i plan on consuming as much i can and recording my experiences the aforementioned sherlock holmes/detective media. this has been an informal goal of mine for the past several years, but i'd love to be able to put to paper my thoughts and ideas in a more comprehensive and cohesive format (thanks cohost for that).

this project is ultimately about "consumption" but i do plan on making it productive! to understand and critically examine media is to improve one's own ability to create. there are a few things i'm also working on (some that might appear on cohost in the future!) as derivative and inspired by the character of sherlock holmes and other detective/mystery media. i hope you enjoy my ramblings about a character and a media that has been deeply inspiring me for literally my entire life!
